When I was first diagnosed, I thought my whole world was gone. You know, you read articles that say that the survival rate of amyloidosis is, what, two years? You know, I’ve done 15 years.

You’ve got to try to come to terms with what you’ve got much quicker. I mean, it took me five or six years to get to a point where my whole life was completely flipped upside down.

Get counseling. Talk to your spouses. It’s very difficult. It is hard, and I know it’s very hard. But counseling saved my life, really, because it comes down to mental health at the end of the day. Medications are there for you, mental health is a different thing.

So always, always try to come to terms with being open with others about it.
