When I have been giving presentations to medical grand rounds or to medical students and residents, what I say to people is that they should be aware of some of the early symptoms, or of the what I call red flags, for amyloid cardiomyopathy, and to do the appropriate testing once you see those red flags.
In terms of advising the general public, older people, or people who have symptoms of peripheral neuropathy — you know, tingling in their hands and feet — bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome, lumbar spinal stenosis, trigger fingers, should think about the diagnosis because if you never think about it, no one will ever make that diagnosis.
